I wanted to share my pacenet experience ---

I live in Bombay and have had a 64 kbps pacenet connection - for a few months, it worked fine. And then I went for their 128 unlimited scheme and recently tried their 256 unlimited scheme (which is going on right now)

I download a lot of music from various p2p clients like emule, edonkey, etc. And also from various free file uploading services like rapidshare, megaupload, etc.

For the first few days, this 256 package worked so perfectly. I got a full download speed of 32 KBps in emule and I was getting 2.4 GB everyday. And there was no downtime for the connection. Then things started changing. Suddenly I saw that if I tried to download music during the day, I never got more than 8 KBps !! That is a fall of 1/4th of the speed promised! I called pacenet and they pretended that there was a problem with the line and tried to give various solutions. For someone who doesnt know much about how these things function, they would not understand. But I could see right through their hoax. Because when I would try to get some common applications or browse at random, I would get the full speed. But when it came to music, it was always 1/4th of that speed.

This implies that they have software which detects the above and acts accordingly. So now I have full speed (32 KBps)for music from 12 am - 12 pm and then for the other half of the day it is barely 6-7 KBps.

All efforts to get them to reveal this reason are futile, because they will never admit it. If I knew more about the law, I would take them to court and make them change their scheme names from unlimited to limited.

So everyone beware!!!! Do not go for their unlimited schemes above 64 kbps. Because those are not unlimited. So if you download a lot like me, try an alternative...or wait till things improve and there is competition to kick out all these stupid isp's. Personally, I dont think things are going to change for a long, long time because this is how india works. I used to get very angry, but now I have simply stopped fighting and I dont even download anymore.

I am going to change my package from this false 256 to maybe 40 when it expires, just for chat or email.
